Flash Fiction

Born Again

“WOO WOO.”

“You don’t scare me.”

“Am I not doing it right?”

“Yes and no. You are wooing right, but woo woo is like ‘Hi how are you?’ Not scary.”

“Oh. I thought it sounded scary …”

“Probably because you didn’t know it was ‘hello’ did the bird say anything else?

“What’s a bird?”

“You are…”

“I’m a bird? Are you sure?”

“Well, yes… you’re small, you have wings, feathers. That’s pretty much bird stuff.”

“Are you a bird?”

“No, a person. I like birds though. There are lots of kinds of birds here. Why don’t you know this already? You look like a grown up…”

“I am a grown-up! Well, I was, I only turned into a bird recently…”

“How?”

“My friend… former friend… got mad at me and turned me into a bird…”

“What did you do?”

“I ate his pie…”

“He turned you into a bird for eating his pie?”

“Well, in his defense, he told me not to eat it, but it looked so yummy…”

“And he turned you into a bird?”

Just then a voice came up from behind, “He turned himself into a bird because that pie was made to turn someone into a bird! It’s not my fault that he ate it first!”

“Andrew!” the bird said, “I’m sorry! I was so hungry and the pie looked so good!”

“It’s OK. I shouldn’t have made it anyway. I was just so angry with Payton, I wanted to punish her!”

“What did she do?” the owl said, popping back into a person.

“She didn’t want to go out with me.”

“I’d go out with you!” said the girl, “can you show me more tricks?”

“That I can…”

“What about me?” asked the former bird…

“Be a bird!” Andrew said, and owl was born again
