Flash Fiction

Bored?

Sitting in the living room, bored. Unfortunately, it also had me looking at a very messy room. I laughed. “This place is a mess,” I said out loud. I knew the who, why and when each spot got like it was. The culprits could care less.

There was spilled sugar in front of the TV. It was when John heard the noise outside the window. He jumped up and ran to the window in case it was Santa! John is four, it’s August…

The curtain, wrapped around the green chair, is where Joan left it after John knocked it off her. I think she was pretending she was a princess. It got dumped there because the cat came in with a mouse in his mouth. All the blocks around the floor were what the kids threw at the cat to get her to drop the mouse. It didn’t bother the cat, they’re plastic. It did bother the cat when both kids threw all of the pillows on the sofa at her, which they did, and now the mouse and the cat are both in the kitchen. I have a “No Kill Trap” in the kitchen so I can put mouse back outside if I offer the cat some cheese. She’ll promptly drop the mouse. Both kids cry when anything alive gets hurt, even flies… I could never live down letting a mouse die!

Then there was the fireplace. No fire though. They decided to try hanging socks up to see if could fool Santa! I was at the grocery store; their father was in charge… The socks hung there, full of dirt. I spent half an hour convincing the kids it was Dad, being funny, not Santa!

These memories are actually so much more than any project.
Life is good.
