Flash Fiction

The Morning After

Gina held out her hand, staring at the gold ring on her left hand. Sitting with her third cup of coffee, nothing seemed to want to come back to her.

The sun caught on the ring, coming out from behind a cloud and sparkling through the window. The ring was lovely. Gold, of course, but little edges on each side where the sun caught and sparkled. She almost smiled. How did this happen?

Glancing again at the bed, she heard a breath. He was having a dream. Cuddled down so low in the bed she couldn’t see his face. Maybe she was sleeping? But no. She could see the brown hair above the blankets. She’d always loved brown hair on a guy. Almost every guy she ever dated had lovely brown hair. It reminded her of her father. She was a redhead. Dad had always said it was the best combination, her mother had red hair too. Dad was such a sweety. Gone now, as was Mom.

Gina was almost ready to wake up her sleeping husband, when she had another idea! There had to be paperwork! Quietly she picked up the clothes checking all the pockets. Nothing, though she found car keys! Maybe there was something in the car they came in.

Quietly going out, she saw the car that matched the license on the key tag. Rushing over, she opened the door and found papers on the seat! She slid in, and opened the papers. There it was! A marriage certificate!! Gina Talbot was now married to John Reynolds. She was now Gina Renolds!

It was a start!! Now all she had to do was find out who John Renolds was… then, she thought, it was also time to get some severe counseling for her alcoholism…
