Flash Fiction

That Party

I knew I shouldn’t have worn my new sweater, but it was coolish, so I thought I’d get away with it. I just wanted to show it off to certain girls who would be at the party and loved to make comments about other girl’s clothes. I was tired of being one of the other girls. I could never have bought this, it cost more than three adequate tops put together! It was a gift from my grandmother who lives in Florida.

So, I arrived and I got some lovely comments, but the rain had stopped and it was getting warmer by the minute… And, those girls hadn’t arrived. I stood over near the window, pulling the curtain away and pretending I was watching for someone just so I wouldn’t start getting sweaty…

David Clark came over a couple times, he kept telling me there was wine in the kitchen and if I wanted, he would sneak me some. I think it had way more to do with what he wanted. And besides the last thing I needed was to get warmer, which I would do as soon as we snuck the alcohol. David had been trying to date me, and most of the rest of the girls in our class, since we were old enough to know anything about boys and girls…

Finally, those girls showed up! I immediately started acting as if I’d been at the top of the party the whole time. Fun, fun, fun!! They ignored me. Then Jane, who’s house it was, came over and whispered “Can I lend you a cooler top?” And I gave up, and said yes.

Well, I accidently left my sweater there, but I came home with a new friend, Jane. We’re still friends, fifty-seven years later. Isn’t life funny.
