Flash Fiction

I Love Hats

My hair was driving me crazy. I’ve never been good at hair. Born with natural curly hair… so cute… so PAINFUL. It’s bad enough trying to get all the snarls out of a child’s hair, but with natural curls, it’s worse! I was so happy when I finally got old enough to brush my hair myself. Well, most of the time I just brushed the top edges till after Mom saw it. She never caught on, but she had four other kids to deal with, all with straight easy to brush hair.

Now as a grown up I do get the hair combed. Thankfully it’s not as tightly curled as it was in my youth… but also getting gray here and there… I have cut it short many times myself, but now even that is difficult. It’s not that I can’t do it, it’s that I don’t want to look like I cut it myself, now that I have so much trouble cutting it myself… Even my eight-year-old granddaughter asked what happened after my last personal cut…

There are many hair salons in town, so I decided to screen them, actually just ask everyone I know which ones they thought were good. That worked out well because as they were telling me how great the place they liked is, I could see their hair and have some opinions of my own… if you know what I mean… Finally, I found a friend whose hair seemed curly, and looked good, and she said it’s easy to keep up too. She lied…

I just got home from my first appointment there… and last… I may have to hide it for a couple months… I hate curly hair!!!! But at least I know what to do with it. I love hats!
