Three denizens of Halloween make a wager. 300-word flash

All Hallows Eve Times Three

Three Halloween fixtures were arguing on the night. Murky, a black cat, Haggie a witch and Spookster, a ghost.
“I tell you; I can scare humans out of their only lives!” Murky boasted.
“Hah, not so! Witches are the scariest beings on this night or any other,” Haggie screeched.
Spookster gave his best rendition of a ghostly sound. It came off well. He grinned into his shroud.

“There’s a simple solution. We split up and take on some adult humans. Whoever manages to make them run for their lives, wins,” suggested Haggie.
“What do I win when I take you both down,” asked Spookster.
“You’ll see if you win,” Haggie said, giving Murky a small wink.

“Let’s be off then, I for one need time to plan and prepare,” Haggie said. Grabbing her broom, she took off before the other two could blink.
Murky looked at Spookster and slowly melted into the darkness. The ghost snorted derisively and floated off to find a suitable venue for his scare. He settled on the movie theatre.

Haggie flew past the moon then swooped down on some humans out late. She cackled as they scattered like leaves. Sadly, they soon settled down again.
Murky took a position on his favorite wall and began to yowl at the moon. He collected various slippers and hairbrushes, but no one was very scared, just angry.
The theatre that Spookster picked for his scare was unfortunately showing horror movies. The people were so scared of them; the ghost’s appearances among them did nothing. He became so depressed he vanished and went home to the belfry where he lived and vowed to keep his haunting for the church sexton and the bats he lived with.
So, no one won the unknown prize.
