Saying goodbye after a lifetime together.

Her leaving wasn’t sudden
Forecast really
from her arrival

What other words
should I have used
when she said
“I can’t do this anymore”
Except to be angry
at another plan
gone awry

At the moment of departure
we stood there silent
Not even goodbye
on our lips

Was there something in her eyes
that said
ask me to stay?

On the surface
I wanted her to go
this angry stranger
her hurtful words
cutting away all the years
of love

In my heart
I wanted to hug her to me
and say, “Don’t go”
Please don’t go
please don’t go
but now she’s gone

And there ain’t no sunshine
When she’s gone
