Flash Fiction

Family Time

Mom walked into the kitchen and almost choked. Trill and Tim were there. Sunday was usually family breakfast, then watch TV or play games all morning without even getting dressed first!

Mom already planned a breakfast, of course. Something easy and desert after! A pie in the fridge.

Looking around, as they hadn’t seen her yet, there was a mess on the counter, spilled milk and sugar it looked like… There was also broken cookies all over the counter, smashed apparently. The milk was on the counter, and a bottle of soda, and a bottle of lemon juice. The floor was covered with some of all of that! Mazie, their dog, was checking everything out.

Before she could get her breath back, Trill turned to Tim and said, “Do you think this is enough?” And Tim said, “I don’t know, how old do you think they are?”

Trill popped back, “I don’t know, a hundred?”

Mom cleared her voice, “What happened here?”

“Mom!” Trill yelled, “it’s a surprise! Get out!”

Still in shock, but now mostly because the kids were doing something together, not fighting… Mom said “Oh!” She turned around and left! Then immediately made John wake up and come downstairs.

Ten minutes later (Mom listening through the door so they wouldn’t get hurt) Tim called. “Ready or not here we come!

Mom and Dad watched as they entered the dining room with dishes full of who knows what…

“Happy Sunday!” they yelled together, “Were you surprised?

“Actually, shocked is a better word for it…” John laughed.

It was edible, and it was fun! The kids both grew up to be fabulous cooks! Kidding… neither could cook their way out of a supermarket bag. But that morning was always remembered by all four of them. That was family time.
