Flash Fiction

The Noise

“What’s that noise?”

“What noise?”

“Why do people always say that?”

“Say what?”

“Exactly!”

“Exactly? Exactly what?”

“What are you taking about?”

“About that noise. You asked me…”

“What noise?”

“The noise you heard… I guess…”

“Well, what is it, a bird? An animal?”

“I didn’t hear it… you did…”

“How could you miss it?”

“Maybe you hear better than I do. Maybe the wind, maybe I was listening to something else…”

“Were you?”

“Was I what?”

“Those things…”

“How would I know if I did any of them? I don’t know when you heard your something.”

“My something?

“Speaking of your something, did you bring food?”

“Of course! In my backpack, over by the rocks. I thought we could eat and watch the cows at Bennet’s farm. They always walk by there to get to their lunch, about noon.”

“Noon went by, no wonder we’re hungry.”

“Ooop, I just heard that noise again!”

“No, that was my stomach…”

“OK, let’s go eat!”

Unfortunately, they found the original noise maker, finishing their lunch…
