The Life We Almost Lived

I can’t stop staring when you’re around,
and my mind keeps wandering to what it could have been
if you were mine, if timing had shown us mercy.

I replay moments that never happened,
conversations we never finished,
lives that brushed past each other
and pretended not to notice the spark.

I imagine your name fitting naturally into my days,
Your laughter becoming familiar music,
Your presence the quiet certainty
I did not know I was searching for.

But here we are, standing in the almost,
close enough to feel it, too far to claim it.
So I stare, and I wonder, and I carry the thought
Like a secret I never asked for,
of what love might have been
if you were mine.
