How far have we strayed..?

.
.
I’ve journeyed to a dark place
Stood at the gates of hell
Seen someone that I recognized
And yes, he knew me well
His face was torn in anguish
Contorted by the fire
It was then that I did notice
I was standing in his pyre

Flames lapped at my ankles
The flesh burned from my knees
And as I pleaded with the man
He just ignored my pleas
I could hear his echoed laughter
As the fire reached deep inside
It singed within my very soul
I could see it in his eyes

All at once I was on a mountain
Nailed to a wooden cross
Blood flowed from me freely
Drank like wine from common troth
The sun baked at my body
Burned forgiveness in my head
The masses fed upon me
Satisfied their daily bread

The multitudes were on me
Setting fires deep within
My throat left raw and burning
Having swallowed all their sins
Then it seemed much cooler
Buried in an earthly tomb
My spirit felt much lighter
Held within an earthen womb

I floated towards the heavens
My flesh left far behind
The light was all around me
No longer humankind
I walk upon your waters
I walk upon your seas
I’m deep within your soul it seems
But you must believe in me

I’m the breath of all things living
Just seek and you will find
I’ll be there when you leave this earth
I’m the passage marked in time…..
