Lynn decides if peace is wrong, she doesn't want to be right. 300-word flash |
Don’t Wanna Be Right “This is wrong!” the strange woman insisted. “Why?” Lynn asked. “It just is.” “That’s not an answer,” she insisted. She grasped her sunflower with both hands. “But they aren’t like us,” the woman persisted. “They’re human, aren’t they?” “But they don’t believe as we do,” the woman continued. “So, you don’t believe in peace?” Lynn asked. “Well, of course!, but…” “Why add a but? Peace is peace. Something we all need in ourselves, our family, our neighborhood, our town or city, our country and our world, don’t you think so?” The woman was nonplussed. Lynn smiled as she held out her flower. One of the monks walking for peace, took it and touched her hand softly. The stranger was aghast. “How could you let him touch you?” she gasped. “He’s probably cleaner than you,” she replied. “But he is Buddhist!” “We do not have to believe the same to want peace in the world. They at least are doing something to further it by walking miles to show their faith that it can happen. What have you done lately for the furtherance of peace?” The woman began to sputter. A man beside her muttered,” from the mouths of babes” and smiled at her widely. She smiled and nodded back. Lynn began to sing “Amazing Grace” at the top of her voice. Other voices joined her. The strange woman was mute and began to back away, shaking her head. Soon she was gone. The kind man stepped forward to take her place. “Hello Lynn! I thought that was you!” The girl turned slightly to study him, then broke into a smile. “Reverend Sam!” she exclaimed. “You know you made a good point about faith, mind if I use it on Sunday?” Lynn was so pleased she giggled. |
