Ephemni Invasion Words 221 When the Espheni invaded Earth, they killed 90 percent of humanity in their initial assault, destroying major urban centers and enslaving many of the terrified survivors. Children were especially targeted, fitted with harnesses and controlled by Skitters—creatures who were themselves enslaved and forced to serve as both overseers and hunters of the remaining free humans. The Espheni were masters of biogenetic manipulation, creating hybrid creatures they used as bioweapons. One of their more effective creations was a giant grasshopper-like monster that injected its victims with a venom derived from avocado, Asian rice strains, and alien DNA. The toxin paralyzed its victims until the Skitters could arrive, attach harnesses, and add the captives to their ranks. These Grasshopper beasts swarmed potential victims in overwhelming numbers. The human resistance was on its last legs when the Volm—hereditary enemies of the Espheni—arrived. They offered their help to Earth’s survivors and, despite overwhelming odds, the human–Volm alliance held firm. Eventually, the Espheni decided Earth was too costly to conquer and abandoned their campaign. After three brutal years of fighting, humanity prevailed. Only ten million people survived, scattered across small communities. The Volm agreed to remain on Earth to help rebuild, but some humans chose another path. Recruited as mercenaries, they left with the Volm to continue the fight on distant worlds. ________________________________________ NEW (24th Birthday!)
