Silvia and Umberto, a long time married couple. 300 words

Crazy Talk

“What are you talking about?” Silvia asked Umberto.

“I’m not talking, I’m thinking,” he answered.

“That’s the loudest thinking I’ve never heard,” she said with a twinkle in her eye.

“So, maybe I’m muttering a little!”

“No need to get testy about it.”

“I’m not testy,” Umberto shouted.

Silvia stared at her husband of fifty years silently. He was back to talking to himself. It hurt her a little, since he’d always talked with her before. Suddenly, of their own accord, tears poured out of her eyes.

Umberto turned to her at the sound, surprised.

“What is it my love? Are you alright?” he said anxiously as he jumped up from his chair and ran to her side.

Silvia mopped up her tears and turned to him with a rainy smile.

“I was just remembering how you used to tell me your thoughts. Now you talk to yourself and leave me out. It makes me sad.”

Umberto took her hand.

“I just didn’t want to worry you with my thoughts.”

“A trouble shared is a trouble halved, I’ve always believed that.”

Umberto sighed.

“I think we should sell the house and move into an apartment. The work and upkeep are becoming too much for me.”

“I couldn’t agree more! In fact, I have been wanting to bring it up for some time. But I think a senior living place would be even better! We could make friends and socialize with less trouble.”

“Honey, as usual, you hit the nail on the head! Let’s see if Chartwell House has any spaces.”

“If we have to wait a little, I’ll be okay. Give us time to get a good price on the house.”

“I hope we’ll go back to sharing with each other again,” Silvia said and kissed Umberto soundly.
