Dangerous Ground

“Don’t go out there,Geenome!” Firkin said as he put his hand on the door.

“With all this rain, I have to check on my books!” he protested.

“Your hollow tree is not leaking, is it?”

“No! I just hate to leave my books unattended.”

“Why? Do they try to escape?” Firkin joked.

Geenome frowned darkly at him.

“Well, at least take a weapon,” cautioned his friend.

“I need no weapons, I have my books!”

“In this case, it may not be enough!”

“Why, what’s out there besides rain?”

“Hordes.”

“Of what?”

“Water zombies!”

“Ha, I care that for them,” Geenome said snapping his horny skinned fingers.

“What will you do if they chase you?”

“Throw buckets at them.”

“I’m not sure that would stop them.”

“Sponges then.”

“That might do it, how many do you have?”

“An economy box in my cart.”

“How will you keep them away from all your books?”

“My entry is well sealed, and the fairy minions will take care of any that make it in.”

“Your slave fairies are so weak, are you sure they can do it?”

“Oh, they’ll do it or...”

Firkin blocked his ears. He didn’t want to hear how cruelly Geenome treated his captives.

“Well, perhaps you should hurry home. Good luck to you,” Firkin said.

“Did you get me the book I asked for from the village?” Geenome had an excited look.

“Yes, of course. It was their last copy,” Firkin said as he handed the oilskin wrapped package to him.

“I’m so excited to add it to my library. In fact, this would look perfect under my throne!”

Firkin waved him off and wondered, when if ever, Geeome would learn to read all those books in his library.

“He thinks having books is the only power.”
