a poem from my upcoming book out in June `25; published are at inkwhisper.gumroad.com

Winter

No footprints in the night.
Snow kept falling,
quiet,
covering
what words couldn’t.

He lay beside me,
ears flicking,
listening to the fire
like he knew
how far the world had drifted.

He was there,
where everything he loved
was breathing.
Matched my breath,
knew I loved him,
watched me
every time I moved.
He breathed in
a calm I couldn't reach.

The pine didn’t mind the snow.
In spring,
it held a hundred nests.
In me,
only one,
and it was empty.

Dawn crept in.
The fire stayed.
And in his eyes,
I still saw home.
