Sara goes undercover as an apprentice. 300 words

Apprentice Glaziers

“Hi Sara, I’m Dean” the older man said to his new partner. She shook his hand gingerly as it was quite a large muscular looking appendage.

“Today, we will be installing safety glass in this lab door,” he continued. Sara caught the old0 glass as he cut the putty around it and then lowered it to the floor.

“Great! You’re doing good work for a first year. I’ll be done my training at the end of this year.” Dean said chattily.

As he raised the new glass, Sara spoke up.

“I thought we were installing safety glass?”

“That’s right. Why?”

“Doesn’t safety glass have metal wires imbedded in it, so it is harder to break?”

“These days, the glass is made different.”

Sara studied Dean and watched every move very closely. When he accidently dropped the new pane on the floor, she noticed it didn’t shatter, but it did get badly scratched.

“So, that’s the new secure glass, is it? Looks a lot like cheap plexiglass to me.”

Dean turned on her, hooked putty remover knife in hand. He lunged at her, barely missing her neck.

“Keep your opinions to yourself, newbie. I have a say in whether you stay in this apprenticeship.”

“I don’t think so, and if I tell the instructor you’re trying to pull a fast one so you can rob this place, you won’t be finishing yours either.”

He lunged at her again, but she easily avoided the knife. Security came busting in just in time and hauled Dean away.

“Thanks for the help, Sara” the head of security said.

“I hate people who use the trades as a front for illegal activities. But I’ll be glad to get back in uniform tomorrow. Being a rookie cop isn’t as easy as the public thinks!”
