Thank you Patsy Cline, for the inspo. 300 Words |
Walking After Midnight Patsy often had trouble sleeping at night. If she wasn’t asleep by midnight, she often got dressed and went out into her world to walk, hoping it would help her get to sleep. “The world is so different in the dark. I am so often into my own thoughts, that I forget to check where I’m going and before I know it, I’m lost.” But this didn’t really bother her much, in fact, she felt as if she now knew her neighborhood, for that matter her community, better than most. This idea gave her comfort. She was never followed and met few other people who cared to say a word of greeting. Patsy felt that was just as well, because what can you really say to a stranger? She did take one precaution, if there was no moonlight, she always carried a heavy flashlight. Finally, some would say, inevitably, the danger of this habit caught up with her. A dog walker found her in a ditch, bludgeoned by her own flashlight. When she got to the hospital, she was nearly dead from exposure. But her stubbornness and her remarkably good health saved her. The recovery was long and slow and fraught with setbacks, but finally, she was leaving the hospital on her own two legs. But it wasn’t the same Patsy. She feared leaving her house alone and became reclusive. Her friends and family tried to take her out, but she was in paralyzing fear the whole time. Her brother brought her something special for her birthday. A black Great Dane she named Midnight. After that, she was out walking late again in no time at all. “Walking with Midnight, makes me happy! Care to join us sometime?” she often said to old and new friends alike. |
