Travis comes home to Babs 300 words

Did It Really?

"My plan worked," Travis said into his new lady love's ear.
"What plan?" Babs purred back.
"You know I told you I loved only you. That I would find a way to dump my fiancee."
"Yeah, how did you do it."
"Turned out I didn't have to do anything but misplace her."
"How do you misplace a person?"
"It wasn't hard. There are many beaches in the Caymans, how is one supposed to keep track of which one you left someone on?"
"You left her alone? Why would she let you?"
"I wanted to go for a boat ride, she wanted to sunbathe on the beach."
"So, you genuinely forgot which beach you left her at?"
"No, not really, I just went back to a few and pretended to search."
"Then you killed her?"
"No, she died of acute sunstroke."
Babs stood up, squirming out from inside Travis' arms.
"If you get tired of me, then what?"
"We'll part ways amicably."
"But what if we're together long enough that we want to marry?"
Travis stayed silent.
"So, you'd get rid of me too? Hope you got that officers?"
Police burst into the apartment. One went over and took off the hidden mike Babs had agreed to wear when she talked to Travis. He looked daggers at her as he was cuffed and led away.
"I thought he loved me. All he had to do is talk to Libby and end their engagement, why didn't he?"
"My guess it was her rich daddy that made him turn to murder. As her widower, he thought he would keep the job the old man offered her to marry his daughter," the senior detective replied.
"I guess I dodged a bullet. But he was so handsome and urbane...." Babs said.
