Tilson tries to steal a stained glass window. 300 words |
Break And Enter Tilson fished some string out of his pocket and fitted it around the piece of stained glass. Carefully he pulled on both loose ends and eased it out of the frame. He stepped back to balance the weight of it and felt his foot slipping on what seemed like a large wet leaf. “No!” he howled. The glass shattered into all its pieces. He lay there listening for what seemed like a long time. “My son what are you doing?” said a voice above him. Tilson looked up. A man in a coarse brown cassock stood looking down at him. “I came for this window. Don’t try and stop me!” “But it is no longer a window, just pieces of glass.” “I can fix it. It will be as good as new,” Tilson told him as he helped him up. “Will it? Modern materials will never match it.” “How can you stop me; you’re a man of God?” “Jesus knows what you did, he will stop you.” “Jesus, I don’t believe in him.” “He believes in you.” “Prove it!” The priest gave a loud whistle. A large Pyrenees dog galloped over and lay on top of Tilson. “You’ll pardon me while I call the police,” the monk said pulling out a cell phone. Minutes later, a patrol car pulled up. At a word from the holy man, Jesus reluctantly got off Tilson in time for him to be cuffed and taken away. For the rest of the night, he picked glass shards and bits of leading from under his skin as he tried to explain himself to some very skeptical cops. “Since you can’t raise bail, you’ll have to spend time under guard at our hospital. Seems like Jesus really did a number on you,” they said. |
