Jeff's encounter - for flash fiction contest. |
Jeff was startled awake, though he didn’t understand why. Reaching for his phone, he suddenly remembered that he had put it on the charger downstairs in the kitchen last night. He did have his watch, though, and that told him that it was just a few minutes after 3 AM. The nightlight was not on, so the power must be out, but he was alarmed to see a pulsing blue light coming from the hallway. Jeff was prepared for power outages, though. He kept a candle and lighter in the nightstand, which he now put to good use. Jeff’s hand trembled slightly as he carried the lit candle through his dark bedroom and into the hallway. The eerie blue light reminded him of the show about UFOs that he had been watching before bed, though he knew that wasn’t very likely. Still, you could never be too sure. After all, that’s just how it could happen. The UFO lands, shutting off power to the area. Then the aliens start abducting people from their beds. Well, they wouldn't get him! Refocusing on his current situation, he now saw that the blue light seemed to be coming from downstairs, and he needed to get to his phone to call the police. Heart racing, he made his way slowly down the stairs, intending to cross the living room to the kitchen, but noticed that the chain on the door was hanging loose, practically inviting the aliens to walk right in. As he hurried to the door to put the chain in place, he glanced through the front window and saw the police car with the flashing blue light stopped behind a truck that had crashed into the pole with the power transformer. Feeling a little ridiculous, Jeff went back upstairs to bed. |
