he told his girlfriend
He was joining the Navy
to see the world.

leaving her behind
in their podunk little town
of Eagle Point, Oregon.

one day
while on deployment
in the Philippines,

he received
a letter from home.

Dear John,

the letter read
I am writing you
to let you know

that I have decided
to marry Tommy
because I can not wait
any longer.

for you to return
to Oregon.

And besides,
I am pregnant
and it is not your baby.

She laughed as John
