this was inspired by Salvador Dali's painting 'The Elephants'

eyes set forth on the foreign ground,

feet going as slow as time and backs straining.

the sticky sand like hot whiskey,

sky bleeding into a coming nightfall,

their legs like branches on a winter's tree.

on and on, in line they march, beaten down,

carrying cities and fortresses on their arch,

over dunes and bones of things they once knew.

religion bent and eyes blind to their future,

people prancing bare on their spines and their feet.

the elephants in formation, pondered by thousands,

will march ever slowly towards their defeated fate.

the man with the broken soul and past,

laughing from the depths of an unknown land,

no one knows what he saw through those wild eyes.
