A story that proves workers fought and died for the right to organize. 300 words |
Workers Unite “I have an idea,” Brant whispered to his fellow workers. “What’s this another harebrained scheme?” “I think we should have a day for workers, we could call it Labor Day.” “The government will never agree!” said another. “Then, we’ll get organized and make sure they do!” “Organize? The soldiers will take us out. After all, the Queen can always make more.” “I think we deserve it and I’m going speak to Her Majesty!” “Don’t do it!” “I wouldn’t rock the boat, Brant!” “She’ll see you die!” Brant ignored them and headed for the Queen. He was stopped at the door by two special guardian soldier ants. “What’s your business, worker Brant?” The ant wasn’t sure how they knew his name. But he spoke up boldly. “I wish to speak to the Queen!” “This way,” both guards said, each taking a side of him and two of his legs per side in their mandibles. They hauled him into the Queen’s presence. Dropping him at her side, they intoned: “This insignificant worker wishes an audience with you.” “Brant, isn’t it?” the Queen asked. All Brant could do was nod. “What did you want?” “I think we workers deserve a holiday called Labor Day.” “You want a day off? The hill will never survive. It must have all ants order to; twenty-four, seven and 365.” “Then we strike,” Brant swore. The two soldier ants and the Queen, stiffened. “Those who do that, will die!” “There will be more to come after us if we do.” “Take him away until I find out more!” the Queen ordered her guards. As they hauled him away, Brant heard the Queen call for her spies. “So that’s how she knows.” Brant murmured as was chewed to death by the guards. 300 WORDS DAILY FLASH 9/1/2025 |
