First day back at school. 213 WORDS |
First Day "You forgot something,” Mom said to the two boys. Max looked at Owen, Owen looked back at Max and shrugged. “You’ll be hungry later without it,” Mom hinted. The pair unzipped the backpacks that were resting at their feet. No lunch. Mom handed the paper bags to them. “That’s not all,” Mom said, looking toward the coat rack. The boys grabbed their nylon jackets for rain. “But look at that sky, Mom,” protested Max. “They’re calling for rain later,” his Mom countered with. Sighing gustily, the brothers stuffed the jackets into their backpacks. “Anything else?” Owen asked boldly. “I don’t think so. Except...” Both boys made a face. “Do we have to?” they said as one. Mom turned her cheek to Owen. “Quick while no one can see you!” she joked. He gave her a quick peck and a side hug. She turned expectantly to Max. The oldest of the two, grabbed her hand, kissed it gallantly and ran out the door. Owen was out the door running, to catch up with brother. He turned to wave at his mom just before he was out of sight. She sighed and turned to enter the suddenly quiet house. “Now what?” she asked herself. Making a sudden decision, she went back to bed. |
