A little early for Halloween, but an interesting side story. 300-word flash |
Horseman’s Revenge “Hide it where nobody will find it!” Samuel was stunned at Ebbs’ reaction to his treasure. Ebbs repeated the sentence with more emphasis. Samuel became more bemused. “If you don’t hide it where it can’t be found, the headless horseman will continue to terrorize us!” he reminded Samuel. He looked at his prize. The pumpkin has a horrible face and it flamed with unholy light by itself. Samuel was anxious to explain how he got such a thing. “It just flew out of the sky and onto my head! I got it off as fast as I could, but it was so cool, I had to show someone.” “So, you picked me! Give it to me then, I’ll put it somewhere even the old ghost rider himself would never think to look.” Samuel looked at his surprise gift, then at Ebbs. Reluctance in every move, he handed it to his friend with a heavy sigh. “Where will you hide it?” he finally asked. “If I told you, I would only put you in danger! “Ebbs told him solemnly. “I could give it back, then there would be the same danger as before,” Samuel suggested wistfully. “I want to stop all danger from this mad ghost for good,” Ebbs said. “Can I help?” “Better not, I’m going to bury it in consecrated ground. The old graveyard where the horseman himself is buried.” Samuel gave up then and let Ebbs do what he would. He would see him when they went fishing in the morning. Samuel walked slowly home. Ebbs never came fishing. In fact, he was never seen again by Samuel or any other people in the village of Sleepy Hollow. Neither was the famously infamous Horseman. The legend quickly died while the town subsided into obscurity once more. |
