I am saved more times than I know by my guardian angel. 300-word flash

Statues for Real

I was about to step off the curb. As usual, my nose was buried deep in a book. A voice behind me shouted out: “Don’t move!”
I froze in place, one foot on the curb, one stretched out to make a step. I felt the hot breeze of a fast-moving car blast past me. I looked around. There was no one around me anywhere.
I heaved a huge sigh of relief as placed both feet on the curb and tried to still my galloping heart.
“Thank you,” I said aloud.
“You’re very welcome, tiddlywinks,” came the reply in my head.
“Auntie Mar, is that you?”
“Who else could be your guardian angel and survive to tell about it?”
I laughed shakily. That was when I knew I better sit down. Spotting a bench, I wobbled over and sat down on it.
“I knew it just had to be someone who loved me. How are Mom and Dad? What about the aunts and uncles?”
“They’re all fine and enjoying the afterlife. Of course, I have little time to spend with them. You keep me pretty busy.”
“Luckily, I chose to be in my twenties when I arrived, so keeping up with you has been relatively easy.”
“Wow, you can do that?”
I heard her laughter tinkle in my ear.
“Of course, it’s one of the perks.”
“I miss you. I’m ashamed that when you had to go into a nursing home, I only visited once.”
“Don’t fret about that! When I got here, I understood why.”
“I wish I could hug you one more time. Also, I’d love your oatmeal cookie recipe,” I said aloud.
Again, the laughter tinkled.
“Sorry dear, I have to go back for a rest before your next crisis. Just remember you’re loved always.”
