Both UppyEar and Stephen gave sound advice. Just write, as annoying an advice as it is, is probably the best advice of all, especially if you write best without an outline. It sounds like you have your setting down and perhaps some of your characters, so an easy way to get started with the writing could to take one of the characters and put them in a difficult situation that could occur in that setting. Fixing that situation could turn out to be your main plot, a side plot in the middle of the story, or being drop completely, but no matter what it will get the writing going. Exploring the concept through a short story could also work nicely. I am currently writing my first novel/novella length story. It has a lot of problems both with plot, characters, and setting, but some the things that really works (a side character and a small part of the setting) was developed through a short story. Simply trying to outline the plot could also be a good way of getting started unless, of course, you know outlining is not for you. Now, there are many ways of outlining one of the most simple of which is to think of cool scenes that could occur in your setting and then putting them in order for the plot. And do not worry if the plot seems simple and overused because plots usually do. |
