A Journal to impart knowledge and facts
July 22, 2015

I'm going to start today to record on a daily basis whatever happens to strike my fancy. So, it is a very cool breezy day. I just posted 5 short book reviews to The Monthly Reading Challenge. I'm suppose to put away some winter wood today from the woodpile outside but I'm playing hookey from work to write so starting this blog will get done.

I'm having a daily fight with a flock of English Sparrows that are trying to take over my barn. They are making a terrible mess so they have to go. I have destroyed several nests so far they don't leave but they get out of the barn when I am around. I'm just starting the fight so I guess I don't know how far I have to go to discourage them.

I'm trying not to spread myself to thin on WDC because I find so many things that are interesting here and I am trying to work on a new story. I really enjoy sitting at my desk with a cup of tea and reading blogs on WDC.

"When I sing, trouble can sit right on my shoulder and I don't even notice." - Sarah Vaughan https://www.thoughtco.com/quotes-from-female-musicians-2457227

Wow. I'm always behind from Friday to Sunday. I'll catch the 12th this morning and maybe the 13th later today.

11 songs? Over the years I've used lots of music to accompany life.

As a child, my aunt let me play her series of vinyl called "Rusty in Orchestraville" One of the disks was broken when I inherited the set. Now you can hear the full version on YouTube.
I have a large collection of different types of music and use whatever strikes my mood.
Otis Redding has a spot especially with: "The Dock of the Bay."
Yanni: "In The Mirror"
John Tesh, "Sax by the Fire"
Paul Simon: "Rhythm of the Saints"
Billy Joel: The Stranger

New Age music works for having a calming influence on both me and my creatures:

Enya: "Memories of Trees"
Golden Bowls by Karma Moffett
Guardians of the Galaxy: "Spirit in The sky"
Elephant Revivals 2013 Album:
Lots of Bob Dylan music.
Cantor Music by Rebecca Garfein
Guitar Music by several classical guitar players
Christian Singers singing Praise Music: Bryan and Kate Torwalt/Blue sky Riders/Elvis/
Rock n Roll by a lot of people
A Lot of show Music by Rogers and Hammerstein:
"Picnic"
"the King and I"
"Oklahoma"
John Denver
James Taylor
Enigma
Wailing Wall
There is a lot more--some is to dance through vacuuming and cleaning others are to sing along. Some are sleepy time.

What was the best adventure you ever had?

owl for signature use "having an entire policy of Us Good, Them Bad does little more than create a magnet for trouble-makers": A quote from Island of the Mad by Laurie R. King

Right now, nothing can really beat the camping trips in august we take with the 30-Day Blogging Challenge. When the month is over I always feel as if I have definitely experienced a trip which has given me new knowledge and insights about the world.

Because of age, I can look back on lots of experiences that were adventurous: riding the A show circuit in Texas, owning my own dog grooming business, studying so many different subjects over my lifetime, raising 4 children, teaching youth groups in cub scouts and church settings, learning to knit and crochet, farming experiences with milk goats-sheep-chickens, college classes, journalism, environment, violence in America, and other subjects. Reading history and finding out how people who studied different occurrences and wrote about them is an adventure.

Just living on the earth is an adventure to look forward to and one to look back upon. Looking back over your shoulder, will the road ahead circle around and connect or just move forward in a straight line? Each person's time line is connecting to build history.

We have been watching speakers on TV telling us why they should be elected. There is a chapter in the book I'm reading about the fascist take over of Italy. "If one plays on fear, takes away any remotely complicated ideas, and offers people a sense of confidence and right, one's followers will beat to death any enemy they are pointed at." From Chapter eighteen of Island of the Mad. this is a fictional story about Sherlock Holmes. Life's adventure right now seems to be leading all of us to pay more attention to just who wants to run the countries of the world. And, how will their decisions, about our lives, affect us as individuals.

My adventures are not more important than any one else's but they shape my thoughts every day.

A week from today is World Food Day . What is your favorite food? What about when you were a child? Feel free to share a recipe, and if you do, make sure to post it into "The WDC Cookbook" as well. *Smile*

Manx Cat from Japan

Food is my nemesis. When I was young I did not like to eat. Too busy. No choices. Now, I can have lots of good things. I really don't like to cook but, I love to eat.

Salmon Patties:

Canned Salmon: Open can. drain. remove white and dark skin from fish discard. (This is because the skin adds a really strong flavor to the meat. You can leave it on if you like the flavor. Just more protein.

In a bowl add salmon, one egg, and a handful of whole oat, oatmeal. Mix together well. Fry in a pan with your favorite oil. You can add a pat of butter for flavor if you like it. These can be baked in a bowl or fried thin or fat however you like patties.

Recently found this for breakfast in Plant Based Cookbookby Trish Sebben-Krupka (an eBook on Amazon) I kind of used their recipe with some changes.
4 cups of whole rolled oats (not instant)
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup guava
1/4 cup shelled pumpkin seeds also other favorite nuts as well I use walnuts
1/2 cup of raisins (I used cranraisins

In a bowl mix rolled oats plus 1/2 cup of oil (they use grape-seed oil, I used olive oil) , Guava and Maple Syrup. Making sure it is well mixed then pour out on a baking sheet. Bake at 300 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes until golden in color. Pour back into bowl stir in all nuts and raisins. Stir thoroughly, cool well. Transfer to a tightly sealed glass jar. Store in refrigerator. Eat at leisure as a snack or cereal.

The original recipe in the book has suggestions for nutty Chocolate granola and coconut granola. I'm thinking coconut oil would be good to take the place of what I used.

Truthfully my favorite foods can be all kinds of cheese, cottage cheese and potato chips but I try to keep away from them on a constant basis and there are so many good fruits and snacks out there that are much better for you.

October 8 is the second Monday of October, which makes it National Kick Butt Day How did you/will you kick butt today?

owl for signature use Be Yourself! Everyone else is already taken.----by Oscar Wilde https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/inspirational

I got a wellness checkup appointment and a flu shot. Must be kicking my own butt. It's just getting things accomplished before snow flies Google defines this as a verb to defeat someone or something. I defeated my persistent action to ignore health issues until the last moment. Plus, I worked on reading this weekend, all the new health insurance changes coming up in my direction. One more fall problem solved.

This week is focused on National Days. *Ha* Starting with today, which is National Frappe Day ! Do you prefer your drinks hot or cold? What kind of blended drinks do you like?

owl for signature use

Be who you are and say what you feel because; those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.--- Dr. Suess

Easy, cold drinks in hot weather and hot drinks in cold weather. I discovered Oat Straw green tea this spring. It is very refreshing iced and good hot. I do like to mix fruit in green tea.

I found Root Beer Tea at Stash a few years ago also very good cold. It has spices mixed in it. However, the U.S food and Drug Administration has banned sassafras roots which can be found in some root beer because it has carcinogens in it. Original root beer was made from sassafras and 16 roots and herbs.

I Have some Orange concentrate from the spice counter at Giant Eagle. Very good mixed in with other fruit juices or teas. I especially like icy drinks. Crushed ice with concentrated syrups. Yum. I used to stop at the library snack shop and buy tea with cherry concentrate when I was going to college. It was the perfect pick me up as I was studying. Later I discovered it also had a lot of calories.

Most of my drinks are plain water with ice or just room temperature water in winter. Not, spectacular but I like water. I'm not flamboyant with drinks. Not really special but cheap.

Write about a memorable encounter with a stranger.

owl for signature use

Somewhere something incredible is waiting to be known-- by Carl Sagan

Hmm, O.K. Since we have one discussion of an encounter with a drunk this month I'll tell you this story. It is as accurate as I can presently remember.

It probably occurred sometime between 1967 and 1969. My first husband and I were the caretakers of a small horse stable on Randolph Air Force Base. The owners of the horses had all gone for the day the stable was officially considered closed by dark. We had guard chains that prohibited entry to the stalls and the base military police did a regular drive by on their rounds every night, about every couple hours.

One night some owners showed up after the horses and the stable had been put to bed. They had all been drinking and they had a friend with them who was out of his mind and into the depths of inebriation. He wanted to ride a horse after he realized where he was and was very loudly proclaiming all kinds of rather dangerous ideas. I took the owners aside and asked them to please control their guest. They did not know how to convince their acquaintance to leave.

So, I stepped up to this uncouth person and simply stated he would leave immediately because the stables were closed for the night. I told them they all had to leave because we had a curfew. When he argued I said I would not argue I would simply call the AP's if he did not leave right then. He looked to his friends who were startled but, suggested I might be right and they all left.

Lucky for me the AP patrol car came through and did their regular drive around the circle at the entry of the stable.

The next day the owner of the horses approached me and said they had never heard of a curfew at the stables. I had to admit we did not have one and they were free to ride at any time as long as they turned the lights out when they left but, I needed to stop a bad situation before it started. Horse back riding and extreme inebriation can be as dangerous as driving drunk.

They laughed and thanked me for stepping up. It's not pleasant to be on the end of threats from a person who is not in their common sense mind.

It was only a simple encounter. Never saw the man before or after so my only memory is of someone about 3 times my size. Hope he wasn't brass. *Laugh*

Write about the person that has had the biggest impact on your life.

owl for signature use THE PERSON?

I'm thinking. *Think* Nope, one person won't work. My mom died the month I was 6. I still remember things she taught me.
She was driving my brother and I somewhere in a vehicle. Two men blocking the road with their autos and talking. She told them to move in very strong language. They did. Made me sing Jesus Loves Me in front of the prayer meeting congregation when I was three.

My Dad: Taught me how to groom, feed, and take care of a horse. How to stop it from biting. Because, I never lied to him he never lied to me.

My Brother: Was always generous to me. He let me win at card games (but not monopoly,) *Laugh*. He built me a tree house of my own, gave me my first radio, gave me my first dog (the dog saved me from a serious human encounter), gave me real leather purse and clutch purse with my name engraved, taught me to drive stick shift, taught me to scramble eggs the navy way, and stuck up for me in lots of ways to many to recount.

Uncles: I had two that taught me things about life they thought I needed to know to protect myself. Good ways to look out for myself because they could tell I was going to have to take care of myself a lot in life.

Aunts: One taught me housekeeping, one just encouraged me in many different ways.

My first husband who always thought I could do whatever I attempted.

A horse back riding friend who taught me to groom dogs professionally so I could earn money to compete in horse shows and and learn to train horses professionally.

My first father-in-law who taught me to use a hammer, argued philosophy with me, treated me like a daughter.

One particular minister of the gospel who took me on his hospital rounds to help him pray for patients and visit the sick. a very knowledgeable man in the ways of humans. And, a seeker of the ways of God.

Professors who recounted lots of off subject information in college classes.

Doctors who discussed medical subjects when I had questions. Veterinarians that taught me to vaccinate and treat different animal ailments.

Farriers that showed me tricks with horse feet to keep them healthy.

Writers of books that I read that told me information about social, medical, and spiritual subjects galore.

And, not least my four children who all turned out to be individuals with their own way of working out problems in life. All four have taught me something at some time, that has special meanings.

I'm the sum of all these teachers. I can't separate one impact from another because lots of these were at different ages and stages of my life.

I think all of these people were remarkable. Many told me answers before I asked the questions or knew I would need the answers. Life has stages and ages. You meet people at different places in your own timeline that impact and implant knowledge. People are there.

Right now at this time it's *WDC*.

Write about a lesson you’ve learned the hard way.

Owl with signature

There must be dozens. Don't let your mind wander. Live in the present. Look for good things every day in life. Do what you know how to do not what others think you should know how to do. When the rushing thoughts try to take over my brain. I sometimes put a picture of multicolored daisy's in my mind. Stops my brain flood every time and puts me back in the present.
*FlowerR* Funny thing. I don't remember ever seeing a picture like the one that pops up of daisies in a field. *Smile*

I must have been fifty before I started reading books about meditation, zen, Mindfulness. Wish I had read them earlier in life. I'm not sure these kind of books must have started appearing when technology took over.

People are individuals. You can't live in other peoples bodies and they should not try to live in yours. Take time for yourself. You deserve to live.

P.S. Could not reach the internet because of heavy rain storms today. Our dish just won't get a signal then. Then when I finally reached *WDC* my mouse quit working. Had to go home and install another. I was grumpy but I didn't scream. Good for me. *Laugh*

Do you speak a second language? If so, what inspired you to learn it?
If not, what language are you interested in learning?

Owl with signature

I have always wanted to learn languages. I have studied some Spanish from an online language app. Learned a few words of Germain out of a text I found in a yard sale. The Spanish I know is pretty much equal to Hebrew. I thought I should know Spanish because it is spoken by many USA citizens.

I studied Hebrew because of studies in the old testament. I can speak some old testament Hebrew, but I'm better at translating it since I never had any one to study languages with.

I can say the Shema because of studies I did in Old Testament and it is also found in Matthew.

And, I have a book about Meditation that uses the Shema. Psalm 1:2 "In God's law doth they meditate day and night." In 1380 Thomas A Kempis stated, "I have no rest, but in a nook, with the book."

There are ways to study Spanish that are easier then the app I use. It's fun to recognize a language if you hear it being spoken. I can hiss like a snake and yowell like a cat as well. *Laugh* I like to imitate sounds.

Arabic would be fun to learn or Greek and Latin because they are basic to biological names. The bird biology course I took, from Cornell University, has all kinds of biological Greek names in it.

Prompt: We all have ‘pet-peeves’. Write about some of yours!

Manx Cat from JapanShe is real

Here is your daily chuckle. I had to google Pet Peeve's to find out what that means: " Something especially annoying to someone." And, I spelled it wrong. Google had to correct my spelling.

O.K. At this time of year it has to be medical Insurance. As aged people we have to review our medicare coverage every year in the USA. Then reopen or change it to meet our needs. When I was young, if you had an illness you could not conquer on your own, you went to the Doctor. In this area there was only a few local. One Doctor gave you advice or prescriptions to meet your needs. We were hardly ever sick. After vaccinations at an early age you just grew up taking care not to have to many accidents. I was fortunate I never even fell out of a tree. Even my own children rarely went to a Doctor for illness.

Now, you cater to the medical profession, beg for dental at an elderly age, are not suppose to have teeth, and only see a doctor if you have a serious illness (body departing the earth). Medical and Dental people try to use your insurance whether you are ill or not. In 2017 a nurse practitioner and a nurse complained because I was not on any medication because it was unusual and I don't believe them either. I got my flue shot at a senior center. Lots, of geriatric people there enjoying the day and cracking jokes. *Smile*

Today, I should be contacting Medicare and looking up insurance to get it over but, I don't think even with rain for the next three hours I will take time to do it.

I do think I need more contact with other people in person. But, in this rural setting that is not and easy thing to do.

I need to Christmas shop now so it will be done by the holiday. I am grateful for online shopping it really helps.

There are probably more small nit picky little every day peeves that simply don't really bother me often. I'm more likely to scream about some old evil intent that lands my way a second or third time when I'm busy with today's life.

To be Peeved or not to be Peeved. I question it? See Ya!
