Genesis also contains stories of individuals like Joseph that gave hope to the enslaved Israelites and would have encouraged them. Israelites personally involved in the exodus as well as their direct descendants probably read Genesis in an attempt to understand their place the saga of the Israelite origin story. The fulfillment of God's promises to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, served as a testament to his enduring faithfulness |
Genesis is basically an anonymous work traditionally it is attributed to Moses; Moses' authorship does not require him to have author the entire book. in fact, all the events covered in genesis took place long before he was born, indicating that must have used sources. instead of viewing Moses as the author of Genesis we should view him instead as a historian/compiler who in addition to direct inspiration from God he also drew together historical information about his family. some biblical historians question Moses' Authorship of Genesis support varying versions of the Documentary Hypothesis If Moses actually wrote/compiled Genesis he probably, did it during the Isrealites time wandering in the desert. most likely be 1440 bce and 1400 bce those that favor the idea that the entire pentatuch was written during the Babylonian exile favor a date of 550 for the authoring of the Pentatuch, |
