Mining for Gift Points
Cryptocurrency is a very hot topic, and Writing.Com was looking for a way to help the community with this new trend in computing. Writing.Com has partnered with a web-based mining company to allow members to "mine" for Gift Points. Gift Points, however, are not a real cryptocurrency; it's just a points system used on the site.

What's really happening is that calculations are performed on the member's computer to mine for the cryptocurrency Monero. The back-end mining company pays the site in Monero. Writing.Com then converts/exchanges on the fly from that real cryptocurrency into Gift Points for you at the current rate the back-end mining company is paying to the site in Monero.

What is Monero?
Monero is a crypto-coin similar to Bitcoin. Mining Bitcoin requires specialized computer servers, which makes it impossible for the average person to do. Monero was created with an algorithm specifically designed so that normal computers would be able to do the calculations required. Writing.Com is essentially making a trade with you on the fly -- the Monero you help earn for the site for our site's own Gift Points.

How does this help Writing.Com?
When you mine for Monero, Writing.Com is paid in the cryptocurrency, and we then convert it to Gift Points for you at the current exchange rate set by the back-end mining company. You are basically buying Gift Points from us: instead of paying with money, you're paying with the work from your computer. As a small business, every purchase helps and supports our community!

How do I redeem the Gift Points from my mining activity?
Our system automatically redeems your gift points after you reach a certain level. We are still experimenting with the auto-redemption levels and the current setting is shown in any of the mining areas. Please note that you do have to refresh the pending balance or load a page for the redemption to take place. All redemptions are logged to your Gift Point Logs (Points/Gift Point Logs in the left navigation menu).

What is the rate of Gift Points earned for the mining done?
The rate paid fluctuates based on the current going rate for Monero. Cryptocurrency prices can swing wildly so it is not possible to provide a fixed rate.

Can I mine on any device?
While you can theoretically mine on any device, it is recommended that you only mine on desktop and laptop computers. Mining on mobile phones and tablets will not yield very good (or any) results because they have very limited processing power. Mining on mobile phones and tablets will also drain the battery more rapidly.

Is there a privacy risk from mining?
We're researched this extensively and have found no instances of privacy issues. The mining process is simply using extra computing power on your local computer to process mathematical calculations. The results of these calculations are sent back to the mining control center. We do not believe that any other data, files or personal information is shared in any way during this process!

Is mining collecting or sharing our info or connection info beyond what WDC normally collects?

Are there limits to mining?
No, there are no limits on the amount of mining that a member can do.

Does mining work from any Internet connection including WiFi?
Yes, your computer must be connected to the internet in some way to use our miner.

Is mining permitted from more than one computer or IP Address?
Yes, there are no limits to mining for member accounts. Members may use more than one computer logged into their account if they wish.

In the mining window, what are "threads"?
A thread is a process on your computer. Most computer contain processors that are multi-threaded. To produce the best results, the miner will start with the most threads possible. You can reduce the number of threads if you find the miner's calculations are slowing down things on your computer too much. Reducing the threads leaves more resources available and open for your use.

In the mining window, what is the "Speed" setting?
The speed setting allows you to control how hard your computer is working to solve the mining calculations. 100% means it's working at the fastest possible rate. 10% is the slowest speed. High speeds will mine the most amount of coins with the resources available, while lowering the speed simply limits the amount of computing resources the miner uses.

In the mining window, what is are "Hashes/S" and "Total"?
Hashes are the calculations the miner is performing. Hashes/S is the amount of those calculations being performed every second. The Total is the total number of hashes performed during the current mining session. We also store and show the "hashes total" produced by your account.1
