Down Time
How many of you just sit (or lay in bed before rising) and think with your eyes closed in the early hours before you start your day? Just 10 minutes! Close your eyes and let your mind wander aimlessly. Don't lead it.
Yeah, I know. Some of you wander aimlessly throughout the day. But you might be surprised at what comes from such an exercise. Most times the only thing I find is a little peace and relaxation to start my day.
Every once in a while, though, the answer to a particularly thorny problem presents itself. You know that feeling. It just feels right and you know deep down that the solution is the right one. How is it, you wonder, that such a simple answer never occurred to you before this?
Ofttimes, my life is a series of constant distractions. I react to external stimuli throughout the day many times without conscious thought--or, at least with the thought necessary to adequately handle a particular situation. Then comes the next crisis. Well, event is probably a more accurate term; they're not ALL crises. Perhaps that is just semantics.
Friday was a day like that. I was trying to finish a very involved cabinetry and countertop estimate for for a large commercial job. Lately things have been slow; I could really use this job an had spent several days prior working on the estimate. Now I'm at the part where all the sub-contractor estimates are back and I must collate everything for the client. I do not want to be interrupted.
Long story short--Friday was one BIG interruption. Clients dropping by, workers needing advice, telephone ringing constantly, and even my stomach started rumbling at 1:30 p.m. Okay, that was important! And the estimate is not yet completed.
But it's close.
Sure makes you wonder how you ever get through your day. Today is Sunday. Maybe I should try some down-time during this day. Yeah!
