| Other variations of the story said that the men had been outlaws from the neighboring country. They had fled to this area because of the lack of law enforcement. They had been soldiers at one time and really were quite well armed and well trained. From the stories, it would probably have taken something with the might of an army to make cause them to leave, but no army was near. I also monitored conversations around Grisylde’s own village. They occasionally talked about the witches. There were some stories of Grisylde’s childhood where bullies would become very afraid of her. There were also rumors about vicious dogs disappearing. Such tales tend to become distorted like the shadows around a campfire, though, so I wasn’t sure how much of all of this to believe. (133 words) |
