How to Read the Tarot

Begin by brewing a cup of tea,
a nervine, lemon balm or chamomile,
this is after all, your future.
A reading at the dark of the moon is best,
before the night creatures crawl
and bad humours fill the air.
Pick a circular deck, with a fairy-tale motif,
and no reversals.
Hold a question in your heart,
shuffle the cards and place them on the table.
Choose only two.
Like the ancient Israelites,
these are your seer stones, Urim and Thumimm,
black and white, yes or no.
Isn't that all you were asking?

Death Maidens

I watch the death maidens
in the trees
white I sit in my car
at the pharmacy pick-up line.
A venue of vultures, perching.
When they feed it is a wake,
crushed bones, skulls, guts.
Nature's clean up crew.
They can, they will, they do.
Are they really unclean, ugly carrion
or necessary sanitation workers?
I pick up my allotment
of Big Pharma
and thank the death maidens
and modern science.
I breathe, I listen
looking for peace with the radio on.
I can, I will, I do.

Terroir

Wine experts say
they can taste terroir
the minerality, the alkalinity
of the soil.
I can feel terroir,
the tender pelts of mosses
growing in the cracks,
the rough cavity in the hollow
of a scrub oak.
There are legions
in this forest,
bundled ancestors
I feel under my feet.
I can trace my breath
along the clouds.
The Wheel of Life turns.

Grandpa Bob Reads the Tarot

Grandpa Robert reads the Tarot
straight and narrow.
He isn't trained
but is whole brained.
This is his retirement gig
Tarot of Id.
Pay what you will
he'll send a bill.
He reads by life experience
so take a chance.
Old Man's Tarot
the way to go.

Domicile

I am far too old
to be a damsel in distress
ensconced in a fairy-tale castle.
My style is more Baba Yaga hut,
all skulls, bones, chicken legs.
Let me prowl and claw
through the dark, dense forest
and wander through the underworld.
I follow the threads
and maps of darkness.
When the temple keepers ask,
"what rough beast slouches toward Bethlehem?"
I whisper,
"Only me."
