The book of Genesis contains stories of the creation, the fall into sin, the call of Abraham. the stories in Genesis were most likely circulated during their time in Egypt reminding them of spiritual and familial history. Genesis also contains stories of individuals like Joseph that gave hope to the enslaved Israelites and would have encouraged them.

Israelites personally involved in the exodus as well as their direct descendants probably read Genesis in an attempt to understand their place the saga of the Israelite origin story.

The fulfillment of God's promises to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, served as a testament to his enduring faithfulness
