Thanks again to everyone who entered the contest. There were so many really creative and emotional poems that it was certainly difficult to choose the handful of prize winners. Some of the poems that placed were long and thought provoking, while others were short but captured the raw emotion of loss. Congratulations to the winners.

Valentine's Day has come and gone. Thousands of love poems and tales of eternal happiness have been written. But, we all know that relationships and love don't always last forever or remain untarnished. Sometimes we are left heart-broken because of divorce, seperation, unfaithfulness, or death and loss. Often, the poems written to describe the pain of love ending are much more personal and emotional.

So, with that in mind, I created this contest for the Broken Hearted.

Rule 1 – The Theme:
This is a poetry contest. The theme of your poem, as stated above, should relate to the loss of love or the ending of a relationship. It could be a poem about you ending a difficult relationship, about you getting dumped, about death taking away the one you love, or even about a relationship you stayed in even though there was no longer any love. It doesn't have to be specifically those examples, but in the general area. I've written a few over the years, so I serve them up as examples (albeit self-promoting examples, but examples nonetheless):

Rule 2 – Length:
If your poem is longer than 2 printed pages, then it's probably too long. Any style or format is acceptable. If you have a question about length, please email Crickado

Rule 3 – Content:
This Message Forum is rated ASR. Your entry may be rated higher if you post your entry as a BITEM (see below) otherwise, if it's posted directly, it must be ASR or lower.

Rule 4 – Posting:
We’d prefer you submit your entry as a {bitem:xxxxxx } within a post. However, if you’re not an upgraded member or you want to save space in your portfolio, feel free to submit your poem directly in the post. Be sure to note the Rating (ASR or less) in the subject line. Any direct post that does not include a rating will be deleted, as well as any poem rated 13+ or higher that is directly posted. Rule 5 – Judging:
Judges will review all items submitted, but will not rate or critique them until after the contest deadline. This initial review will determine whether the poem complies with all the rules. Why do we wait to rate them? This will give you time to make corrections and let other Writing.com members give you feedback. After the deadline, the judges will begin the process of reading, rating, and ranking the entries.

Rule 6 – Number of Entries and Fee:
There is a 2 entry limit. Each entry is judged on its own merit, so it's possible both of your poems could win prizes. There is a limit on the overall number of poems of 50. There is no entry fee.

Rule 7 – Prizes and Notification of Winners:
Winners will be posted on the forum on Wednesday the 3rd of March. There is no minimum entry rule, so if we only get one entry, we’ll hand out one prize. The prizes are listed below in the “Prizes” section. All entries will be listed here in the message forum in the contestants section.

Rule 8 – Start Date and Deadline:
The contest begins 15 February 2004. The contest ends at midnight Writing.com time on February 29th. If you submit an entry after that day, you do it at the risk the judges may never look at it.

Rule 9 – Additional Rules
As questions are asked and answered, amendments may be added. For example, last time we ran the contest we noted that 13+ and 18+ rated items were okay to submit, but neglected to mention that they could not be entered as a direct post. We strive to amend the rules as little as possible, but sometimes it’s necessary. If a rule is added, it will be highlighted with bold text.
