African-American poet/songwriter/publisher Truth Thomas invented the Skinny as a vehicle for communicating bits of the human condition through crisp, vivid imagery.

The Skinny is constructed in eleven lines. The first and last lines use the same words, but not necessarily in the same order. All the other lines consist of one word only.
