Una loved giving tours at the art museum. Art was her passion and she enjoyed sharing it with others. The museum was very popular with a variety of paintings from all over the world. After 20 years she could practically do the tours in her sleep. Most of the paintings she enjoyed, some of them were a little mundane, but one she absolutely loathed. Passing it by everyday didn't help diffuse the discomfort she felt, it actually got worse. The painting was of a black horse made to look like it was about to leap out of the canvas. Most people described it as playful and some children who visited would make drawings of it.The name of the paint was “Horse in Play” In her nightmares it always jumped out of the canvas before running her down. Una kept hoping they would replace the piece but unfortunately it was popular. She usually ignored it as she walked by, but something urged her to look. Her heart skipped a beat. The painting had changed, not a lot but paintings shouldn't change at all. There was less space above the horse's head and one hoof was missing. It was as if the painting was zooming into the horse’s face. The very idea of it was absolutely absurd. Slowly over time it changed until all she could see was the eyes. One time she asked a coworker but they looked at her as if she was mad. She didn't want to pass the painting but it was the only way out and she just wanted to go home. The horse was gone. She couldn't move, her legs refused to do anything. A soft cry erupted from her as the sound of the hooves got closer and closer. 295 word count |
