Ice Skating
Ice Skates image for Winter Outdoor Activities Raffle
Originally, skates were merely sharpened, flattened bone strapped to the bottom of the foot. Skaters did not actually skate on the ice, but rather glided on top of it. True skating emerged when a steel blade with sharpened edges was used. ... Adding edges to ice skates was invented by the Dutch in the 13th or 14th century.

Sledding
Sledding pic for the Winter Outdoor Raffle supporting 4 groups + my membership.
Although we think of sledding as a popular wintertime sport now, the first sleds were built and used in hot climates, and had nothing to do with snow. The Ancient Egyptians and many other cultures used a form of sled to transport extremely heavy stones and other goods across flat surfaces. By setting up a system of logs to use as rollers, a sled could be placed on top, functioning much like a modern conveyer belt. And even though there were plenty of tall sand dunes in Ancient Egypt, there is no evidence that any of the laborers used to practice sledding down them for fun on their off time.

Skiing
Skiing Equipment for Winter Outdoor Activities Raffle
Around 1850 artisans in Telemark, Norway invent the cambered ski. This ski arches up in the middle, under the binding, which distributes the skier's weight more evenly across the length of the ski. Earlier plank-style skis had to be thick enough not to bow downward and sink in the snow under the skier's weight.

Ice Fishing
Ice Fishing pic for Winter Outdoor Activities raffle
Like most other types of fishing, ice fishing’s invention was rooted not in sport, but in survival. Ice fishing was created out of necessity, when hunters and anglers needed access to food during the long, cold winter months. Native American tribes in the Midwest, such as the Ojibwa Indians, first chipped away at the ice with tools, and then used hand-carved wooden decoys and spears to hunt for fish.
