Well, of the two choices you listed, it seems much more likely that she would track down the warlock than somehow lose her ruby.

However, both choices are pretty cliche. Why not try something completely new? Perhaps when Samera returns home she finds out something she knew about the witch; perhaps in her misery she wanders the woods and stumbles across something she'd never seen before; etc.
