Well, as for the failing, one way iun which villians tend to fail is they underestimate their opponent. Perhaps they saw a possible weakness, but the character was just using it as a ploy, something like that. Or, you could get assistance from another, more prominant character, which could lead to a relationship between the two, not romantic nessecarily, but it could be. Both of those seem kind of cliche though, so I'll keep thinking.

To find North, one must first determine which way is which, which way is right, and be dissapointed that North is left.
