During this year, I read John Truby's book, and it made a lot of sense to me.
In short, write down the premise. Pull out your characters from the premise.
Then, the most important, know the ending.
If you can, write down the main points of the ending. That way you'll have the idea to write toward.
And while there is still time, make a rough outline of the story.
This will be my third time. Although I finished the word count before, I was unhappy with the endings and how my stories took a turn sometime during their middle. I learned the hard way that, in a short time, it is almost impossible to write well enough by the seat of my pants.
