Near future Sci fi is dated once that near future arrives and either exceeds or doesn't live up to the technology predicted. I think space operas have a longer life simply because they tend to be set further into the future.

I guess there is a compromise to be reached. Setting a story in the near future often gives more wonder than setting it in the far future as the reader can relate imagine living at that moment on their lifetime. You have to trade that off with a shorter shelf life.

That said there are many classics still popular today despite dates science and technology proving that if the story is good people will ignore the dated tech.
