Magic and Science?
Well, I'm at it again, NaNoWriMo has claimed every free moment I have this November, and following suit, I'm continuing my series of novels with Book 3. If you read my introductory post in the Hub, you'll know I moved away from a gritty story free of magic, and... well I just couldn't not have magic in my story! :P

As I said in that post, I've set out to write something 'different.' A story that sort of shies away from the tried and true method of Dark Lord vs. the world, or Man vs. Fate. In so doing, I've now included magic into this work, but I don't have your standard wizards, sorcerers, or witches. Instead, I set out to combine Magic with Science. I wanted to bring this up as though magic is a pretty easy subject for me, being a fan of Terry Goodkind and R.A. Salvatore, combining it with Rennaisance era science is a bit awkward.

I've managed to brew up some very interesting characters with titles that I just love, an example of such is my Astronomages, and Mathemagicians.

I suppose the names are self-explanatory, but tying magic with Astronomy and Math is pretty difficult :P Thus far I've managed to establish Astronomages as diviners, basing predictions on celestial alignment, as well as casting certain spells depending on the ascendant location of a planet within a zodiac constellation. (The Zodiac shall be a key component of this particular story)

The Math one however, is proving difficult. I thought originally that geometry would be an easy start. I could allow these characters to be some sort of enchanter or glyph expert, but I would like it to be more of a straightforward magic. (offensive and defensive) Perhaps spells based on calculations, but what would they calculate? I tell you, I'm in love with the idea, but I scarcely know where to begin. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I would even give credit in the opening pages to anyone who may be of some help here. Thanks guys!

I often think that one day hereafter our lives, when we are no more men than we are earth; when the wars of old are not but dark and distant memories, we shall have what none before us have had - a future. But knowing what I know, and having seen what I've seen... I dare say it's only a dream. It's an unfortunate business being king; damned unfortunate..."
