In college working toward a degree in Psychology this topic was brought up quite a bit. From what I have studied, you are correct. Sometimes DNA has a lot to do with chemical imbalances. DNA also might also explain why those that experience similar traumatic events might break differently. An example would be my mother's last husband. He was bipolar/schizophrenic and so was his mother. There is still so much to learn about mental illness when it comes to genetics.
Personally, I've chosen to not go the medication route. I didn't like the way they made me feel and since I grew up in an abusive home where drug addiction was common, I fear the possible addictive qualities of the prescribed drugs. Even though I agree about sometimes mental disorders are passed down through DNA, I intentionally chose therapists who were like the one Charlie explained because I didn't want to be prescribed anything.
Like you, I've found meditation to be a great help when fighting depression.
