Char, in general, people these days are not afraid to be upfront and blunt about the way they feel, rather than doing so in a more obscure way. We have also gotten more jaded when it comes to violence due to repeated exposure through video games and television, so it only makes sense some of that might bleed into modern music. In that way, I do think music has gotten more violent. But, music has always told a story relevant to the particular time and audience.
