A reviewing forum for those interested in improving their reviewing skills. |
Like the white rabbit, I'm late, I'm late! A. Have your writing skills improved by reviewing other WdC members? Oh yeah. Big time. When I first rejoined in 2015 I really reviewed a lot and enjoyed it tons. It got my writing voice warmed up after being off the grid for 11 years. And it wasn't hard, then, as I was just giving my opinions as a reader. I guess now I am a better writer, I feel more pressure, more of a responsibility I guess to give better reviews or to be more helpful if I can. That has slowed me up, along with this focus issue I've been having. Will probably always have. Seems here to stay. B. Do you make a practice of reviewing daily? Good golly no. The only thing I practice daily is not doing too much, at least since the PE. I got tired of never making my commitments, so I just do my best not to make any now. In a perfect world, I'd love to do a couple reviews a day. Totally. And one of my issues is I am incapable of lying or fudging—I used to be able to easily say what I want while being nice. Now I have to really THINK about it to make sure I am nice, which is weird, maybe my brain just works slower. 'Cause I am nice! But I can be abrupt in editing without meaning to sometimes. C. Do you have thoughts to share on this topic? I always tell newbies to review in order to BE reviewed. I know this. That's why I pay people to review my work, I totally don't review enough anymore. Wish I could. Want to even. But I perhaps obsess a bit... as I mentioned, everything has to be AUTHENTIC and true; I don't know why my standards for myself are so high. One reason I am not in any reviewing groups anymore is that incorporating their standards with mine is a chaotic thing lol. I have good motivation, just this block. Like a writers block almost. It just takes a LOT of energy. And I really like rewarding helpful reviewers with some GPs, 'cause it takes effort. Hopefully not as much as it takes for me though lol. There needs to be a balance as well: you cannot review so much that you neglect your own writing or projects. Balance can be difficult. But, it's all worth it! Hey River |
