Break Loose Word Count 279
Working overtime, making to most of every last second of daylight, up and down and up and down, rows of wheat pulled from the field, moving up the conveyor belt, falling into the trailing hoper, the John Deere finally gave way and the front right wheel broke away from its axle. It rolled down the hill toward the stream where an unsuspecting heard of cattle were grazing. The farmer stood up on the deck a shouted toward the cows but his voice could not penetrate noise of the billowing diesel engine. The farmer felt helpless and the wheel continued to gain momentum as it continued down the hill.
Just then he caught a glimpse of the horn knob in the center of the steering wheel and without hesitation, he pushed hard and stayed on it until he saw the cows look toward the tractor. They saw the wheel and scattered in a cloud of dust.
Thankfully, the herd saw the wheel in time and they moved away quickly enough to divert a casualty. When it finally reached bottom it struck a large boulder, flew into the air, over the stream and landed on the surrounding fence nearby. Seeing the opening, some of the calves tried to run for it. As they climbed the bank of the stream on the other side however, the wheel came rolling back toward them and they came running back to the farm.
The next day, at sunrise, the farmer mended the fence and had the tractor put back together. He finished the harvest, said a long prayed of thanks, and took a long, well deserved rest.
