Mr. Frog
WC 297

Christmas had been a success; gifts were played with, tried on, plugged in, or gobbled up. People were wandering off to other parts of the house.

My favorite gift was from my daughter, Cindy—a lovely deep green throw. I covered my legs with the soft fabric as I relaxed in the recliner.

“Let’s clean up.” Cindy handed me a trash bag. “We must start dinner soon.”

I placed my new blanket on the arm of the chair and got up. Remnants of wrapping paper and bows peppered the family room floor. As we filled our bags, we put aside whatever could be recycled.

Kendra, my four-year-old granddaughter, picked up the green blanket, sat down, and covered up, head to toe. She sat perfectly still, totally hidden. Cindy nudged me.

“Kendra?” I said and waited, “Mommy. Where’s Kendra?”

“I haven’t seen her!”

Kendra did not move.

“Oh, there she is.” I tapped her head. “I know you’re in there.”

Still nothing, except maybe a toe twitch or a bit of a wiggle.

I tried another approach. “Mommy, where do you think Kendra might’ve gone?”

“I’ve no idea. I hope our little sweetie doesn’t miss Christmas dinner,” Cindy said.

“Ribbit!” Kendra said from underneath the blanket. “Ribbit!”

“I wonder if Mr. Frog knows where Kendra is.”

“Why don’t you ask him?”

I bent down and tapped Kendra’s head again. “Oh, Mr. Frog, have you seen my granddaughter, Kendra?”

Nothing but a bit of a hidden head shake.

“It would be a shame for her to miss dinner. Maybe you can join us, Mr. Frog, and have her piece of pumpkin pie.”

Kendra jerked off the blanket. “Gramma, it’s not a frog! It’s me, Kendra!”

“Oh, there you are, my sweet granddaughter.”

Bless her heart.
