Another fascinating book review. You know I enjoy reading true crime (and watching it on TV), so I'm sure this book would be a good one for me.

I watched a true crime show just the other day where they were discussing children (under 16s) who commit crimes and whether they can change. My instinct was to say, no way. They've committed the crime. Lock them up indefinitely (I think the maximum sentence for murder if you are under 16 is, like, twelve years over here). But watching the show did make me think about the me from when I was under 16, and how much I've changed. It's a tough one. Maybe it should depend on the facts of the crime. I have to say, though, in principal, I don't agree with the death penalty. In principal. Sometimes, though, crimes are so horrific that I wonder about that belief.

I know this kind of situation is difficult. Scripture says do not kill. I wonder about this because even when a person kills during criminal activity, then is justice any better for killing the guilty? And sometimes an innocent is executed.

The flip side to this is keeping law-abiding citizens safe and also the prison population safe from dangerous prisoners. Most of the time people are able to change sometimes it is gradual, but there are few who are so mentally messed up that they can not change. The question is about punishing someone who is terribly mentally messed up versus keeping them safely confined for
public safety.
